James Victore

Author, designer, director and fireman. James is widely known for his timely wisdom and passionate views on design and its place in the world. He constantly strives to make the work sexual, strong and memorable. Among his clients are Bobby Brown Cosmetics, TIME Magazine, School of Visual Arts in New York, Moët & Chandon, The New York Times, Esquire Magazine.
James teaches at the School of Fine Arts in New York. He lives, loves and works in Brooklyn where he has his own workroom.

At the age of 19, he moved to New York and when he turned 20 he had already dropped out at two different colleges. However, he began learning under the guidance of Paul Bacon, a well-known designer of book jackets. Bacon's lessons made Victore capable of becoming a graphic designer. He took responsibility for his education, career and sought to make his name independent as a designer and artist.

In 1990, he founded his own design studio in Brooklyn, "James Victore Inc." But some of his works are in the permanent collections of the Palace of the Louvre in Paris. Other museums and libraries that displayed his posters include the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Design Museum in Zurich, and the Library of Congress in Washington.
In honor of James Victor's contribution to art, he was awarded various awards over decades.

When I look at the work of James, I feel that he was and has something to say to people and this world. So strong energy that he wants to give out to everyone.
What I also like is how he teaches his students how to create his work. His words that you should invest in your work all the qualities that are in you. Be funny, be sexy, be mysterious or smart: put it in your work and then people will feel you and your style. Then you can say, “Damn, I’m a designer and I want so!” Because as he correctly noted, we do our job not to please the client, to please the parents or to receive money. We are doing work to make ourselves happy. Thus, you give people a piece of yourself and what it says about you that you are an artist and designer.

James told how he found his style and his voice in design when we are surrounded by such a huge number of trends and innovations. His thought was that many people sometimes think too much and try to please fashion, follow trends and forget what they themselves really want. Because people do not listen to themselves, and this is the only way to find themselves and their voice. People try to follow someone’s style and copy something, but that’s not how it works. And by the way, the great advice he gave to young and novice designers is that even if your design initially looks awful,
clients told you about it - that’s not so.
Just try to find your customers.
Those who really appreciate your design.

James gave 3 tips to find your style:
1. Learn all
2. Forget it
3. Then create a design
It really helps when you receive a lot of information and want to manage it and process it, and at the same time get rid of excess information. It is useful to read and learn something new, but sometimes you need to be able to forget unnecessary things and concentrate on yourself and your feelings.
Like James, I always love to finish my work. If I sat down in the morning and gave myself a specific goal to finish some task today - I won’t get up until I finish the last line. I like his approach to design and the way he finds his personal style.
